Traditional pub by the Orwell River

"The Butt & Oyster" in Ipswich, England, is a historic pub distinguished by its picturesque location along the banks of the River Orwell and its reputation for excellent food and drink. It is part of the Deben Inns group, a local chain known for its high-quality pubs and restaurants in Suffolk. The pub is situated in the small hamlet of Pin Mill, just a few miles from Ipswich, offering an idyllic backdrop with views of historic Thames barges, swans, and the constantly changing play of the tides—a place that attracts not only locals but also visitors from afar.

Best fish and chips Ipswich

The cuisine at "The Butt & Oyster" is deeply rooted in British pub tradition, yet with a touch of sophistication that highlights fresh, local ingredients. The "Broadside Beer Battered Fish & Chips" is particularly popular—a classic where the fish is fried in a batter made from Adnams Broadside Ale—crispy, juicy, and perfectly paired with thick chips. Another highlight is the "Slow Roasted Lamb Kleftiko," a tender lamb dish that is slow-cooked with herbs and lemon and served with a rich sauce, giving it a Mediterranean twist. For fish lovers, the "Grilled Seabass" stands out as a light yet flavorful dish, served with seasonal vegetables and a delicate sauce. For dessert, the "Triple Chocolate Brownie" tempts with its rich, chocolatey indulgence, served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to round off the meal.

Local beers and wines selection

The drink selection is equally impressive, with a strong focus on local beers. The pub takes pride in offering a selection of Adnams ales brewed at the nearby Southwold brewery. Notably, the Adnams Ghost Ship, a fresh, citrusy pale ale, pairs wonderfully with the hearty dishes. Alongside beers, there is a well-curated wine list and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages to complement the offerings.

Dog-friendly restaurant in Suffolk

The ambiance of "The Butt & Oyster" is welcoming and rustic, characterized by terracotta tiled floors, wooden paneling, and a large open fireplace that provides warmth during the colder months. The large bay windows offer unparalleled views of the river, creating cozy nooks that invite lingering. In summer, the outdoor areas with picnic tables right by the water enhance the maritime feel. The pub is also dog-friendly—dogs are warmly welcomed and can even snag treats at the bar—making it a popular destination for walkers exploring the surrounding trails.

Historic pub with maritime decor

"The Butt & Oyster" has a rich history that dates back to the times of smugglers and sailors who once navigated the River Orwell. The name itself is a nod to the oyster fishing that was once a significant industry in the region. This past is kept alive through maritime decorations and memorabilia inside the pub, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. For special occasions, there is a separate room on the upper floor that accommodates private celebrations and also offers a splendid view of the river.

The staff is known for their friendliness and attentiveness, making the visit even more enjoyable. Although the pub is often busy, especially on weekends or during good weather, the team ensures that service remains smooth. For those who prefer not to dine in, there is also the option to order takeout, increasing flexibility.

Lovely pub, after a nice walk along the river nothing beats a pint of Ghost ship and an eggs benedict, which was superb. Nice dog friendly pub, highly recomended.

Lovely location, even this time of year. Parking would be a premium in warmer months. Warm cozy, pub vibs, varied menu with specials board too. Drink prices a bit steep.

A good recommendation from a local for a hearty breakfast. Great quality food. Booking is advisable but the team are really happy to accommodate walk-ins where they can. Dog friendly pub. On the Kings Costal Path walk

Very doggy friendly, there were five well behaved pooches in the upstairs restaurant. Lovely views, great food with good sized portions. Parking can be an issue at busy times though.

Great food in what is a lovely traditional pub. Really helpful staff offering great service. Allow time for parking though as both the main car park and nearby car park are on the small side with no street parking.

Went after a walk to a reserved room for lunch. Everyone was happy and since we'd ordered food earlier in the day it all appeared by magic without much waiting.

Lovely food and service, but very very busy even on a cold week day, parking very restricted and small, better off parking up the road in the paid car park

We really love this pub and always enjoy our experience! Today we visited with my Godparents who are vegans and little toddler for lunch, we hadn’t booked but were lucky enough to get a nice table for 6 by the window. The food was all fab as usual, the vegan options very also good including a vegan sticky toffee pud! And the service was good too.
